Mather Golf Course is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Sacramento, California.
Mather Golf Course is located on the former Mather Air Force Base. This is an 18 hole tree-lined course with open fairways and medium-sized greens. The course first opened for play in 1959. Jack Fleming designed it in 1959. This championship length par 72 has three tee boxes that provide the opportunity to test your skills and will challenge how much of a long ball hitter you are. The Blue Tees play 6,734 yards, the Whites 6,436, The Reds 5,732, and The Junior Tees play 3,363 yards.
Front Nine
Your day will begin with a straight shot par four with a narrow fairway and a handful of small bunkers that will test accuracy. This is a great opening hole for the long ball hitter, allowing the opportunity for an opening birdie.
On No. 3, you will notice that this beautiful par 3 offers a vast green to hit if you can keep it between the two bunkers guarding it. One hundred forty-five yards is all that is keeping you from that second birdie of the day. This hole provides the chance to look like a pro no matter your skill level.
Back Nine
Hole # 10 is a sharp dogleg left. You will need to play a straight tee shot along the left side, and this will leave you a long iron approach to a well-protected green.
Hole #11 is a short par three that throws every obstacle on the course at you. A huge lake sits right in the middle of the fairway as the perfect shot will put you on the green; anything short of that and you will be hitting out of sand or digging through your bag for another ball.
On #12, you will experience the shortest par five on the course and have an excellent opportunity to get one stroke back. The left side of the fairway offers more level lies for shots at the green. Be sure to adjust for shots drifting to the right off a sidehill lie. Stay below the hole for a birdie or eagle putt.
Hole #13, "The 285-yard par-four signature hole is framed by trees and reachable in one with a powerful tee shot. You can almost guarantee a bogey if you gamble and miss the green.
No. 16 is the longest hole on the course. A slight dogleg left, you will need a solid drive, a great second shot, and a problematic uphill third shot to reach the large sloping green. A small bunker becomes your last obstacle on this 528-yard par-five that personifies the open fairway theme given to you by Mather Golf Course.
On No. 17, you can admire the view from the tee and then hit your best drive of the day; you'll need it- stay right of center to avoid being blocked out by trees at the corner of the dogleg. If you can reach the green in two- you'll be rewarded with a friendly putting surface.
No 18 is a deceptively short hole. Maintain your focus; a right to left tee shot will leave a mid to short iron in. An approach aimed at the middle of the green is your safest bet.

Played May 2015. This was my first time playing the course, but I had heard good things from other golfers I knew. We played early on a Saturday morning and the pace of play was fine. We were walking and the course is flat enough and the layout is condusive to walking. The greens were in great shape and were very fast with lots of subtle breaks, so they were tough to read for the uninitiated. We played from the white tees, and even then there were 4 or 5 par 4's that stretched over 400 yards. The fairways are wide but often tree-lined. Overall, it's a good local course that I would like to play again, but it's not a destination course. The grill had a decent choice of items, but the eating area was very Spartan.

I used to consider this my home course. The fairways were nice and green, not dry and brown. Over the last two year the course has become an embarrassment to the area.

They've done a good job keeping this course up; it can get boggy if it rains a lot. Tougher course for left-to-right hitters, as all doglegs set up for draws (for righties). Can get windy.

Greens were super fast, probably due to the weather and temperature

I play Mather regularly andhave since i was in the military 30 years ago .... great course for the average duffer golfer with wide forgiving fairways and lots and lots of big tree shade for the hot summers of the sacramento valley. I currently work about 5 miles away and consider this course to be my home course ....

Best public greens in Sacramento, CA. Challenges most country clubs.

I really enjoy this course. It's very forgiving with wide open fairways. If you go on the weekend, the pace of play might be slow. Overall this is one of my favorite courses in the area.
